Large industrial containers are referred to as large open-top drums, which are used for the storage and transportation of liquid substances. Foreign manufacturers need to import goods into India following these BIS regulations. Strict adherence to safety and quality standards is necessary during drum production to ensure their suitability for industrial use.
Drums are primarily used for packaging chemicals, oils, and other bulk liquid substances in food processing and chemical industries. Products sold in India should display the valid BIS certification along with the ISI mark. Foreign manufacturers will also have to go through the BIS customs clearance process and pay the BIS duty. IS 13997: 2014 shall define the specifications for 200-litre steel open-top drums with fixed bottoms, which shall be of Grade A and Grade B. Grade A: Body and ends: 1.25 mm thick steel. Bottom - double or spiral/three bottom seams; full-size openable lid. Grade B: The body, ends, and bottom seams of 1.00 mm thick steel. It shall have a spiral/three bottom seam and a full-size openable lid type. These drums are used to store and transport materials safely.
